When I saw the Letter To The Editor in the Dec. 11 issue of the Wednesday Journal of Oak Park & River Forest titled "OPRF should eliminate football," I wasn't surprised.

Although the Oak Park and River Forest High School girls basketball team went 1-3 at the 10th Annual Montini Christmas Tournament, the Huskies closed out the four-day event with some encouraging efforts.

With a first-year head coach in Staunton Peck and a new-look starting lineup, the Fenwick High School boys basketball team is learning on the fly this season.
Approaching a new year and the second half of the season, the Fenwick High School girls basketball team has to feel good about its accomplishments in 2018.

Considering the preseason hype regarding the Oak Park and River Forest High School boys basketball team, the Huskies 8-6 record could be regarded as disappointing. Despite losses to Riverside-Brookfield (70-50) and Fenwick (66-65), OPRF started off 6-2 this season. However, the Huskies have dropped four of their last six games.

The Wednesday Journal sports year in review invariably features inspirational stories, provided mostly by OPRF and Fenwick high school athletes. Kids like Jake Rundell and Jacob Kaminski, who won state championships in wrestling for OPRF and Fenwick, respectively, come to mind.

Since the Chicago Bulls own a 7-25 record (worst record in the NBA) and an apparently bleak future, it's been slim pickings lately for basketball fans in the Chicago area.

In his second season as the head coach of the Fenwick High School wrestling team, Pete Kowalczuk believes the program is probably a year away from being truly competitive.
With the toughest portion of their schedule on deck, the Oak Park and River Forest High School wrestling team underwent ideal preparation at Hinsdale Central's annual Rex Whitlach Invitational over the weekend.
