After 13 years serving as Oak Park and River Forest High School’s athletic director, John Stelzer is retiring. He will be leaving the school in 2021.

The school told Wednesday Journal it will start screening applications and interviewing candidates this week now that the posting for the position has closed.

“John Stelzer has done fabulous work running the OPRF athletics department for more than a decade,” said Greg Johnson, OPRF’s associate superintendent.

“He’s led a program that not only has won multiple conference, regional, sectional, and state titles in boys and girls sports, but also has demonstrated a high level of academic achievement by our student-athletes. He’s also done an incredible job managing the tens of thousands of logistical and financial details that come with overseeing 29 sports with 80 different team levels. He leaves some very big shoes to fill.”

OPRF sent out a survey to parents Nov. 11 asking what they are seeking in a new athletic director. The school’s twitter account also tweeted out a similar message on Nov. 19.
