Although the Oak Park and River Forest High School girls basketball team went 1-3 at the 10th Annual Montini Christmas Tournament, the Huskies closed out the four-day event with some encouraging efforts.
The Huskies competed well in a 62-58 loss against Batavia in the fifth-place game of the consolation bracket. Darse Sanchez led OPRF with a game-high 29 points. Karly Cantrell and Passion Worsham played well defensively.
In the game before their matchup against the Bulldogs, the Huskies defeated conference rival Lyons Township 50-46. Ashsa Spencer (20 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists) and Sanchez (23 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals) both stuffed the stat sheet for the Huskies. In their previous meeting this season on Dec. 14, the Huskies topped the Lions in Oak Park 61-54.
The Huskies lost to Marian Catholic 49-37 and Benet Academy 75-53 in earlier rounds at Montini.
Against highly regarded Benet, the Huskies played well in the first half by making 13 of 27 shots, highlighted by six treys. Nevertheless, the Redwings started to pull away from OPRF in the second quarter en route to a 45-32 halftime advanatge.
Sanchez paced the Huskies with 14 points, while Kendall Holmes and and Brooke Schramek scored 17 points apiece.
OPRF (10-10) hits the road to kick off 2019 with games at Glenbard West (Friday, Jan. 4) and at Proviso West (Tuesday, Jan. 8). Both games start at 6 p.m.
In addition to several league games, the Huskies will face several excellent non-conference opponents including Nazareth, Fenwick and New Trier in January.
