Since the OPRF Hockey Club hired Dave Dyson in 2013 to serve as the organization's hockey director and varsity head coach, the Huskies have shown steady improvement on the ice. This year's team is the best one he's coached.

Over the years, Fenwick High School has had several student-athletes leave their mark in competition. The numbers of three girls' basketball players - Erin Lawless, Tricia Liston, and Devereaux Peters - were retired in a pregame ceremony before Fenwick's game versus Stevenson on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Good things come to those who wait. United States speedskater and Oak Park native Emery Lehman's patience certainly paid off after the completion of the U.S. Olympic long-track speedskating trials at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee (Jan. 2-7).

I saw in Runner's World the other day that 101-year-old Julia Hawkins recently set a world record for the 100-yard dash with a time of 39.62 seconds at this year's National Senior Olympic Games. While I find a 101-year-old runner remarkable, perhaps even more inspiring is the fact that she only just started running at age 100. Hawkins explained that if she's active enough to run to answer the phone, she may as well expand on that.

In an impressive debut at the 35th Annual Komaromy Classic hosted by Dundee-Crown, the Trinity High School basketball team won three of four games en route to a runner-up finish. More importantly, the Blazers discovered an intangible every team looks for during the season.

The Oak Park and River Forest High School gymnastics team lost key contributors Alyona Jochaniewicz, Natalie Weeks and Camille Moore to graduation last season. The Huskies' optimism is understandably high this season, however, thanks to a talent-laden roster.
