At King Chop Suey, they serve the chop suey of my youth: decent and fresh ingredients, spiced very non-aggressively to appeal to the many tastes, with rice and an eggroll, all of it tasting like 1964.

It's hard to get excited about a sandwich, too often a sad and pedestrian lunchtime choice, more often a default than a desire. On days when I plan to go to Freddy's, however, I find myself thinking about the Italian sub all morning. It's that good. Freddy's makes the sub you want.

The Basque cake at Hubbard Inn, Hedin told us, is the culmination of different recipes he's made over the years, explaining, "I've got a nontraditional take on it by placing a layer of vanilla pastry cream and chocolate ganache between the layers of cake, and finishing the top layer with cinnamon sugar and lemon zest. It's garnished with a simple vanilla Chantilly."

I can't see anything wrong with restaurant owners denying service to those who support a regime that appears to them to be unethical and cruel. However, if Miller, Nielsen or Sanders showed up at a Maxwell Street taco stand, I wouldn't harass them, even though I judge them to be the biggest danger to this American life since the Civil War.
